New Scheme to Help SMEs Improve Workers Health and Welfare

24/10/2009

The Department for Work and Pensions has launched The Health Work and Well-being Challenge Fund to encourage local partnerships plus small and medium sized businesses based in the UK to improve employees’ health and welfare at work.

The Health Work and Well-being Challenge Fund is a grant scheme of £4million available over two years and is a competitive scheme to fund innovative projects that improve employees’ health and welfare at work.

SMEs that have identified a problem that is affecting the health and welfare of their employees and have a proposal to improve the situation can apply for funding to implement it. Businesses must have been established for at least 2 years and the proposal must be for a new project.

The Department for Work and Pensions has said that projects to improve mental well-being in small businesses will be a priority and as this is a competitive scheme not all applications will receive funding.

DWP minister Lord McKenziesaid:

"We are working with employers to provide the necessary support to help workers remain happy and healthy in their job. This fund will improve conditions in the workplace and will help to prevent workers taking time off sick."
