Calculating how many tiles you need for a wall.
How do I calculate how many tiles I need to tile my bathroom?
We will give the answer below to anyone who really needs to know. But this is the wrong question. This is because tiles are purchase by the square meter, not by the numbers of tiles.
The recommended method of measuring the are to be tiled is:
- Measure the height of the room. This is best done in meters. If you use cm instead, then divide by 100 afterwards.
- Measure the width of the walls that need tiling. Again this is best done in meters.
- Multiply the two together to give the area of the wall.
- Add up all walls.
- Then add 10% (or multiply by 1.1). This allows for waste.
You then purchase your tiles by the square meter. So for larger tiles you will automatically be given fewer tiles. This method works well for wall tiles.
For floor tiles you calculate the area by multiplying the room width and length together.
If you want to check how many tiles are needed, then work out the area of one tile and divide one by the other.
