Most expensive domain names
16/03/2009
How much are domains worth?
They cost from £2.99 to purchase, but can resell for any amount, depending on market value
In February 2009 the domain name www.toys.com was bought for $5.1 million by Toys ‘R’ Us. This makes it one of the most expensive domain names on record.
Why it is worth so much? The generic keyword ‘toys’ is so valuable as it has a huge number of searches every day. With a domain name like toys.com getting to the top of the natural rankings will be easier. But also the name looks so good that it will get a very high click through rate, so even if it is only in position 3 or 4, it is likely to get clicks ahead of the top placed listings.
Many domain name sales are not public or involve other factors as well, so rumours that sex.com was bought for between $4 and $14 million are hard to verify.
But according to records of the Domain Name Journal, the following rank amongst the most expensive domain names:
- Fund.com, $9.99 million
- Business.com - $8 million
- Porn.com, $9.5 million
- Diamonds.com, $7.5 million
- Beer.com - $7 million
- Toys.com, $5.1 million
- asseenontv.com - $5.1 million
- altavista.com - $3.3 million
- Vodka.com, $3 million
- wine.com , $2.9 million
- CreditCards.com, $2.75 million
- autos.com $2.2 million
- Computers.com, $2.1 million
