Drupal SEO
Drupal is a popular free content management system for websites. It is used by a range of individuals, developers and businesses and has a wide range of addon modules, themes and functionality which can be used for applications from portfolios to blogs to extensive online shops. Search engine optimisation on Drupal, however, can be difficult at best. Although there are a selection of modules developed by the community to assist with SEO many webmasters still find the system extremely tricky to use when it comes to search engine optimising their websites.
If building a Drupal website, as with any other system, SEO should be considered from the design concept level up – this is why at Cornish WebServices we always design websites to be highly visible to search engines and build them on our search engine optimised CMS.
For Drupal SEO, there are plenty of tips and tricks you can use to help your website become more visible to Google and other search engines in order to grow your business.
- Install a good SEO module at the same time you install Drupal – we would recommend Drupal SEO Tools, which is a complete solution that is free to add, Nodewords, or the Drupal SEO Checklist module which provides help and guidance specific to the platform. These modules are free to install and should be considered essential as the core system has very little inbuilt SEO capability.
- Turn on clean URLs in your site configuration to ensure you get good, non-spammy and keyword-sensitive URLs for your website rather than URLs littered with dates or numbers
- Make sure you install a global redirect module to make sure you avoid duplicated content issues which can crop up if you have a directory and page with the same content - and make sure you set your robots.txt file to block the /node/ site section for the same reason, as duplicated content is very poor for SEO
- Drupal has no inbuilt ability to add meta tags, so make sure along with your other SEO modules you install something like the Drupal Meta Tag module so you can add titles and descriptions to your pages and articles as they go up
