Remember Your Social Media Manners
13/12/2012
Social media managers already have a lot of hats to juggle – as well as designing and branding their social accounts to ensure a consistent brand presence across all platforms, interacting with customers, starting conversations and handling ad hoc customer service enquiries, they also need to ensure above all else that they keep their work and personal social statuses completely separate, as this unfortunately employee of the Montana Tourist Board completely failed to do a little while ago - to the lasting amusement (and surprisingly large number of endorsements) of the organisation's followers.
This is a classic example of When Social Goes Wrong and is really rather unfortunate to see, especially when it could so easily have been avoided with proper management and social media training – which this employee apparently somewhat lacked.
Firstly, anyone managing multiple (or even single) social media accounts which are public facing and used to represent corporate entities or even just small businesses and organisations should not have these linked to their personal accounts. Create a separate login using a work-based email and then you can always be sure you’re never posting the wrong thing on the wrong account.
Secondly, always check who you’re posting as before you hit post! Facebook always shows you a handy message at the top of the page which explicitly states who you are posting as – make it a part of the posting routine to check this before you press any buttons.
Finally, and most importantly, check your pages regularly. The use of management tools like Hootsuite has made social media management a breeze for those sick of bouncing in and out of logins like lost tennis balls, but these tools are no substitute for regularly logging onto your business accounts and pages “in the flesh” and taking a look at things to make sure posts are sensibly ordered, well presented and – as in this case – where they ought to be.
