Paid Search Marketing

What is Paid Search?

Paid Search MarketingThe most important type of paid search is Google AdWords pay per click (PPC) or online advertising. The paid ads are the ones you see marked sponsored ads along the top or right of the search results.

With pay per click your ads are only shown when someone searches on relevant keywords. You pay a fixed amount every time someone clicks through to your website based upon keywords they have selected. Provided you choose a good set of specific keywords, this means you are only paying for visitors who are interested in whatever your website has to offer. An excellent advertising model.

In the UK Google is dominant, with Yahoo a long way behind in second place. This varies in different countries. For example in Russia, Google takes second place to Yandex. There is also a difference depending on type of market (business or consumer).

In the short term, paid search offers IMMEDIATE benefits.

  • Fast to set up - increased visitors and results within days
  • Very measurable, so only effective paid advertising is continued
  • Very responsive to market or strategy changes

Is your website not as visible as you would like? Would you like more enquiries quickly? Do you want to record accurately how much new leads are costing?

PPC management or Pay per click services

The Google AdWords system has grown considerably in the last few years in terms of functionality. The same is true for other providers such as Yahoo! Search.

This means there is huge potential for better targeted ads, but it also means that managing these campaigns effectively requires skilled staff. Well optimised PPC campaigns achieve much better results than poorly setup campaigns. This is not a small improvement of a few percent - it is a huge difference of over 40%. This means that using people who have passed the Google AdWords exam (and who are experienced PPC managers) will be worthwhile.

HELP! I've seen people offering cheap PPC management - is there a catch?

The following may be helpful:

You can manage your own campaign and Google will help you. Bear in mind they will advise you t spend as much as possible to keep your ads running all the time, this may not be in the best interests of your business.

Marketing agencies that charge a % management fee - will also have an incentive to increase your PPC spend

Bid management tools. These sound great and they can be helpful. But bear in mind that functionality of these tools is always playing catch-up (sometimes many months’ even years late) compared to the live interface. Also they are predictable. In competitive markets if our client's competitors are using these tools it is relatively for us to use this information to our client's advantage. Cornish WebServices only normally use such tools when it is advantageous to alter the bidding at least every half hour.
